A Qualitative Study of Nebraska Sixpence Program Directors\u27 Experiences and Perceptions

    Get PDF
In Nebraska more than one-third of infants and toddlers live in conditions that are not conducive to early learning, putting them at-risk of failing in school and in life. By age four impoverished children are behind their peers by an average of 18 months. Sixpence Early Learning Fund works to ensure that children who are identified as at-risk in Nebraska are given the most optimal beginnings, preparing them for success throughout their lives. Currently, Sixpence is supporting thirteen programs across eleven school districts in Nebraska. Early childhood educators fulfill an important role that deserves increased recognition. Leadership in regards to early childhood education has received limited research attention. The purpose of this study was to gather descriptive information about Nebraska Sixpence programs and about what directors of successful programs attribute to the success of programs. Three Sixpence program directors were interviewed. Five themes emerged: (1) empowering families, (2) individualization, (3) ongoing growth and development, (4) collaboration and partnering, and (5) balance. This research adds to the growing body of information available for early childhood education for infants and toddlers, and particularly by illuminating the directors’ perspective, taking one step closer towards the goal of increasing knowledge which supports early childhood success. Implications for future research and practical application were discussed. Advisor: Helen Raike

Museum Digitisations and Emerging Curatorial Agencies Online

    Get PDF
This open access book explores the multiple forms of curatorial agencies that develop when museum collection digitisations, narratives and new research findings circulate online. Focusing on Viking Age objects, it tracks the effects of antagonistic debates on discussion forums and the consequences of search engines, personalisation, and machine learning on American-based online platforms. Furthermore, it considers eco-systemic processes comprising computation, rare-earth minerals, electrical currents and data centres and cables as novel forms of curatorial actions. Thus, it explores curatorial agency as social constructivist, semiotic, algorithmic, and material. This book is of interest to scholars and students in the fields of museum studies, cultural heritage and media studies. It also appeals to museum practitioners concerned with curatorial innovation at the intersection of humanist interpretations and new materialist and more-than-human frameworks

An Evaluation of FIRST Court in the Douglas County Child Welfare System: Improvements in Caseworker-Attorney Relations

    No full text
The current project examines improvements made in the Douglas County Juvenile Court system since the implementation of FIRST Court in January of 2017. Specifically, this thesis examines how attorney-caseworker interactions have changed since the implementation of this new therapeutic track. Previous research has shown that problem-solving courts are effective in achieving desirable case outcomes by using a therapeutic, rehabilitative approach as opposed to a traditional, punitive approach. Research has also shown that party collaboration and teamwork positively influence case outcomes. The present evaluation used court observations and professional interviews for the purpose of assessing participation and involvement, levels of trust and respect, and perceived level of team membership for both attorneys and caseworkers. Court observations were collected over the course of the first year. Interviews were conducted at the beginning of the implementation of FIRST Court and six months after FIRST Court began. Our findings show that while perceived feelings of trust and respect were not improved for caseworkers, levels of participation and feelings of team membership significantly improved with the implementation of FIRST Court. Implications and limitations are discussed

Remote presence and public interaction as a means of exploring and evoking interest incultural heritage sites

Based on a case study where the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm, Sweden, was extended to an archaeological excavation site, this paper addresses the potential for increased public access to cultural heritage sites by means of video-mediated communications and outreach activities. During two weeks in the summer of 2008 the Stockholm Art and Industry Fair of 1897 was excavated as part of a collaborative process between archaeologists and the general public. A “Mediated Window” was designed which enabled visitors to remotely experience presence and to interact between the museum and the excavation site, thus creating an architectural, mediated extension of space. The case study confirmed that mutual gaze is important to the experience of presence and that a combination of architectural and technical design is required to fully support this experience. The mediated museum extension attracted large numbers of visitors, including new categories of visitors who were less likely to visit the museum. The study showed that a mediated extension, in combination with outdoor public learning activities and participation, can evoke an interest in modern cultural heritage and promote public dialogue in such contexts.
